Energy Efficiency
The Energy Star window and door program is
a voluntary partnership between the U.S. Dept. of Energy (DOE) and the window/door
industry to educate consumers about energy efficient products with superior thermal
performance ratings. The DOE and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed
this program because most states do not have adequate codes regarding energy efficiency
for these products.
Now consumers do not have to be confused or misled by manipulative sales methods
in reference to ratings such as R-factors or U-factors. As an example, some companies
"manufacture" high ratings by testing only certain components of their products
such as the center of the glass rather than testing the
entire window. Consumers can feel confident when they buy an
Energy Star compliant product, that they are buying a window or door
unit that meets a minimum standard of performance for the entire unit.
